Sand cast stools are high success for artist Sam Lloyd

Having one of the most diverse and best equipped sand foundries in the UK made Maybrey Reliance an obvious choice for up and coming artist Sam Lloyd. Include his graduation from Kingston University, an institute with close ties to the Kent based foundry, and you have the perfect circumstances for creating a unique, comfortable and aesthetically pleasing stool worthy of Heal’s Discovers.

Sam Lloyd graduated from Kingston in 2013 with a BA Hons in Product & Furniture Design and an ever growing list of awards. As part of Lloyd’s final major project, he was encouraged to break free of the studio environment and explore different manufacturing techniques. Maybrey Reliance work closely with the University to provide both design assistance and product manufacturing, enabling Lloyd to experiment with available techniques at the foundry and create the stool for Heal’s Discovers. The form of the stool top is the result of his experimentations with sheet materials and this successful design provided the best seat. Easy to assemble, the stools have a trio of fumed oak and oak legs that screw effortlessly into the seat; these are then supported by an aluminium brace also produced at Maybrey’s.

The aluminium seat and brace were manufactured using the sand casting process ‘to create a strong three dimensional stool top that can be cast in one piece' Lloyd explained. One mould produces one casting. Each half
of the mould (cope and drag) is packed with sand by hand and then left to harden.  Once both parts have hardened, the mould is put together and weights are added to the top to stop it exploding when the metal is poured.  Once the metal has set, it is then a case of breaking the casting from the mould and submerging the metal in water to strengthen it. The marks and imperfections that would normally render a casting useless are celebrated in Lloyds stools, as they cannot be replicated and make each individual stool top unique.

Shortlisted for the 100% Design Award @ New Designers 2013, the stool was quickly picked up by Heal’s Discovers and the two heights available have been a huge success, with only two items left in stock. Maybrey Reliance is proud of its design and innovation heritage and continues to both initiate and facilitate unique and ambitious projects. Working closely with University students and other artists encourages design ambition and creative exploration.

Versatile paving & decking supports make light work of difficult locations

Levelling a sloping terrace with paving or decking can often present difficulties with regards to the quantity of pedestals required at varying heights.  However, along with a comprehensive range of adjustable bases and support plates, Carosystems Limited provide extension pieces to further enhance the Caro Pedestal’s flexibility.

Available in 20mm (F20), 35mm (F35) and 100mm (AF100), the pedestal extension pieces allow you to continue
to utilise the same adjustable base over a large paved or decked area/balcony. The other benefit of the pedestal extension piece is that you can use them in multiples to further adjust the height variance.

In the decking area shown (Image 1), the PV5/9 (Adjustable base to suit heights: 52-84mm) has been utilised
with one and then two F35s (along with a CP support plate for decking) to offer significant adjustment over the entire area.  The F35 increases the height of the PV5/9 by 35mm, meaning that the height variance will now be
87-119mm.  Stacking a second F35 on top will increase the height by another 35mm (122-154mm) and so on.
The F20 works on the same principle, but offers an increase of 20mm instead of the 35mm.

(Image 1 -  PV5/9+F35)

The AF100 increases the adjustable base height by 100mm.  However, whilst the F20 and F35 are fitted between the adjustable base and relevant support plate, the AF100 is screwed in place between the two parts of the adjustable base (the bottom platform and the threaded piece).  Again, you can use these in multiples by simply screwing them together.  The exploded diagram below (Image 2) shows the component possibilities and where they go within each pedestal.

The breadth of the Carosystems range means great versatility for customers with both straight-forward and unusual locations to pave or deck. Maybrey Reliance; Quality Manufacturing in the UK

From the year it was established in 1927, to today’s modern era, Maybrey-Reliance Foundry has stood the test of time and continued to be at the forefront of manufacturing. Tracing the company history back to 1839 when George England founded the Hatcham Iron Works and started George England & Company, reveals a beginning rich in product innovation and ground-breaking design, with the patent and
production of revolutionary locomotives for railways across the UK, Europe and India.Vintage Bugatti engine

By the 1860s, the company had become the General Engineering & Boiler Company before
manufacturing was taken over by Reliance Foundry in 1975 at its new factory in Greenwich. Eventually purchased by and merged with the Hills Diecasting Company of Sydenham; in 2002 Maybrey Precision Castings of Lower Sydenham was also purchased and Maybrey-Reliance, now one of the best equipped and experienced foundries in the country, was formed.

Offering Die Casting and Sand Casting, the Kent based Foundry now has a range of services to offer new and existing clients across a broad spectrum of industries.

Quality Manufacturing in the UK’ details examples of these services and what’s available in-house: Tool and Pattern making, Gravity Die Casting, Shot Blasting, Sand Casting, Surface Finishing and Light Engineering to name a few. Utilising these services has meant Maybrey Reliance has been able to
produce submarine torpedo tubes, aircraft parts, modern sculptures and just as the George England
and Company did over 150 years ago, Maybrey-Reliance are still producing specialist locomotive
parts for steam engines.

Throughout its history, Maybrey has pioneered the development and production of items in a range of industries, with innovation pivotal to its success. In-house experience and investment in modern technologies means Maybrey-Reliance can offer a service that is second to none. Specialist engineers can also advise customers about casting designs and therefore reduce costs from the onset. Capable of supplying first prototype to production components, Maybrey-Reliance has the experience, skills and technology to make concept a reality.

Innovation is an attitude

Made In Britain is a phrase that is often used to define the consumer requirement in the UK, but as time has ebbed on Made In China seems to have quietly and unconsciously replaced it.

Here at the Caro Group we are proud of our manufacturing history dating back to 1827; including the provision of an exhibit for the Great Exhibition in 1851. The Caro Group are constantly changing and adapting to the manufacturing environment which has allowed us to thrive in a time when the industry in general, is struggling.

Caroflow Limited has recently launched an enhanced version of its WaterWall and WaterDoor demountable Flood Defence barrier, which has been created with the aid of customer feedback in our design offices.  This innovative new barrier allows total flood protection for both residential and industrial properties, with small and large scale options. The barrier is currently being approved by the British Standards Institute, allowing Caroflow to move forward with expert market knowledge and provide a first class UK designed product in a market worth £6Billion.

Caro Systems are likewise renowned for the quality of their paving slab support systems, but moving boldly forward they have launched a new adjustable system for both paving and decking, allowing them to further establish themselves in the market.

Maybrey Precision Castings are also forging ahead with innovative manufacturing, in the Die and Sand Cast product market.  Manufacturing in the UK has been hit badly by the migration of casting to Eastern Europe. However, Maybreys have managed to stay in the top 10 medium sized foundries in the UK by investing in cutting edge environmental and reclamation plant, allowing them not only to cut costs, but also to retain work by adhering the company to ever increasing environmental legislation.

The Caro Group of Companies have the benefit of a structured support group which drives forward product design by allowing all the companies to draw on years of expertise in areas such as design, marketing, sales and finance to allow the pioneering attitude that exists in the group to flourish.

With innovation in the UK at an all time high, the group has moulded every aspect of creativity and ingenuity to get to the forefront of the manufacturing market in the UK and our forward thinking attitude will assure that we stay there.

Flexible flood protection for electricity sub-station

A recent installation at a major Electrical sub-station, in West London, has further shown the flexibility and scope that Caro Flood’s WaterWall Defence Barrier can bring to such unique projects.

The client had required a barrier that could completely surround the large external electrical equipment on site, without preventing access into the fenced off enclosure and all components could be stored away when not needed. Caro Flood’s WaterWall was a perfect solution, but with few right-angles in sight, the resulting design was pretty unique and included a very long run of panels!

As with all Caro Flood projects, compound angles were calculated and a bespoke solution designed with multiple non-standard angles; before production was started with delivery to site within two weeks.

The location, which is right beside a river, has been affected by flooding in the past and the station is under continual threat. The clients had to get something in place as soon as possible and, after in-depth research, they decided on the Caro Flood Defence Systems WaterWall and WaterDoor products because of its reliability and convenient storage.

GRK Flood Defences were the sub-contracted installers to the Main Contractors on site. A major supplier and provider of Flood Defence products, GRK Flood have supplied Caro WaterWall and WaterDoor to many residential and commercial properties throughout the UK.

A combination of experienced installers and WaterWall’s simple design, meant installation was quick and the sub-station fully protected from future flooding within one week of arriving on site.

If you are looking flood prevention solutions, please contact the Caro Flood Defence sales team on 01763 244446, for more information or your no obligation quote.

Historic George England locomotive visits London

Passengers at Kings Cross station in London were delighted to see the over 150 year old Ffestiniog Railway’s Palmerston locomotive, along with a four-wheeled coach and a slate wagon, on display in the concourse this February (18th - 26th Feb 2017) to promote ‘Big Train Meets Little Train’; the recently published free guide to Welsh narrow gauge railways and how to visit them by rail.

How many admirers would have known that his unique and historic display was built less than four miles away, by George England Boiler Company in the Hatcham Iron Works situated between Pomeroy Street and Kender Street?

One of six similar engines produced by England on the site between 1848 and 1870, the Palmerston dates from 1864 and was the first steam locomotive ever constructed for use on the narrow gauge.

It’s survival is remarkable as, once thought beyond restoration, it is now in full working order and in regular use on the line.

Maybrey-Reliance, part of the CARO Group, can trace its history back through Reliance Foundry Ltd, The General Engine and Boiler Co., to George England and to the Hatcham Iron Works in 1836.

Maybrey-Reliance is still a fully functioning casting supplier and now one of the best equipped foundries in the country.

The company today produces high quality Gravity Die and Sand Casting in the full range of aluminium alloys.

They also produce high quality iron and SG castings as well as steel and bronze.

Bespoke drain solution success, for national client

Caroflow recently received an enquiry from a national Builders Merchant for a bespoke solution to an unusual roof drainage scenario.

86 balconies required individual drainage outlets, but standard versions available on the market were not sufficiently deep enough to allow the vital connection to pipework below the roof slab.

To overcome this, the Caroflow buying team approached their aluminium pipe supplier and sourced additional tubes to match the outside diameter of the existing Caroflow balcony outlet. Upon the outlets arrival at our factory, the Caroflow in-house welding team set about cutting the pipe and welding it onto the existing outlet to create the overall length of 440mm required on site.

The bespoke, problem solving product has been a huge success and from original enquiry to delivery, took less than 5 working days to complete!

To speak to our specialist team about your bespoke order or any of our other products, please contact info@caro.co.uk or call 01763 244 446.
