"4th August 1864. Two large passenger engines suitable for excursion work offered by G England for £2800 apiece. Accepted by Beattie on 18th August 1864 and paid for 13th October following. Numbered 201 and 202 and transferred to the Engineers Department as No.9 "Harrison" and No.10 "Bidder" in August 1875 and April 1876 respectively. Both broken up in June 1889"

(Around 1862) “Well does the writer remember clambering on to the window sills of the erecting shop in Pomeroy Street, to filch a glimpse through the upper and unobscured panes of what was going on inside….
I recollect also beholding in the erecting shop two 2-4-0 long- boiler engines standing apart with their tenders. They likewise were garbed in blue, and each carried two safety valves in separate brass castings of the Gooch GWR pattern, which the late Mr. E L Ahrons some-what irreverently likened to crushed bonnet-boxes. The casings had probably been left over from the express engine contract which England & Co had executed for the GWR some years before and on the waste-not-want-not-principle were being used up. What the origin of these twins was I never heard, but they were in stock several years and were ultimately sold to the L&SWR about 1865, and there numbered 201 and 202. The first I knew of this sale was seeing one of them run through Clapham Junction coming, apparently, from Waterloo, and still in her native blue uniform. I believe these were the only long-boilers built at Hatcham.”

“These locomotives were remarkable for having two safety valves-one lock-up and one spring balance- which were provided with covers of the shape designed by Sir Daniel Gooch for his broad gauge engines after he abandoned the haycock dome, and made famous by the “Lord of the Isles” class. No other instance of the transportation of this design of cover to a railway unconnected with the Great Western Railway is known to the writer.”

“In 1863 Messrs. England and Co supplied six engines to the West Flanders Rly Co. , which were also of Mr Cudworths No 185 type. The divided fire-boxes, however, which formed the principle feature of that design, were removed after some experience in Belgium, and replaced by others of the Belpaire type. Thus altered all six engines are still working in Belgium (1909). Some have been rebuilt with boilers of a different design, but all the class are still at work after a life of forty-four years, which speaks very well for the workmanship put into their engines by England & Co. The ruling dimensions are: Cylinders, 16 in by 24 in; coupled wheels 6ft in diameter; heating surface, 120 lbs.; and weight 29 ¾ tons empty.”

The 14 locomotives above were originally ordered by the South Eastern Rly and some were cancelled due to the workman’s strike at Hatcham.
“It is not known how many engines were in the order. This company (West Flanders) passed later to the Societe Generale d’Exploitation, and after that to the Etat Belge, who numbered the engines 433-440 (implying there were eight, not six as stated by Bennett). I am doubtful about the date for these engines as I feel inclined to consider them as part of the order for Cudworth type engines, ordered for the South Eastern Railway in 1865 to a total of 20. There were to be 14 couple engines and 6 express engines. If the 14 were of the Cudworth 2-4-0, then the tally would be complete; as 2 went to the S&D, 4 to the South Eastern and presumably the rest to the Flandres Orientale (Occidentale surely!). They may not have been delivered to Belgium until 1868.”

"Altogether 14 were completed, of which four were accepted by the South Eastern (Nos 215-218), six sold to the West Flanders Railway and two shipped to Genoa, Italy."
